Why Your JBL Speakers Sound Bad Is a Process Problem, Not a Gear Problem

Most people don't have an audio gear problem. They have a process problem. I say this after six years of handling sound orders for events, corporate meetings, and a few weddings. I've made—and documented—twelve significant mistakes, totaling roughly $4,700 in wasted repairs, rental fees, and refunds. Now I maintain a checklist my team uses before every gig. Argument 1: Compatibility is decided at the spec sheet, not the unboxing

In 2018, I bought two JBL speakers for a backyard graduation party: a JBL speaker PartyBox and a JBL speaker Flip 6. My logic? They're both JBL. They'll pair together, right?

They didn't.

The JBL speaker Flip 6 uses PartyBoost for stereo linking. The JBL PartyBox uses a different TWS protocol. The two devices couldn't even see each other—and I only discovered that after an hour of pushing buttons and restarting the JBL app. (Ugh.) Eventually, I ran an auxiliary cable across the yard, creating a tripping hazard and a genuinely ugly setup.

That mistake taught me a rule I still use: wireless compatibility is decided at the spec sheet, not the unboxing stage. Now, every speaker on our inventory list has a “protocol” column. JBL Flip 6? PartyBoost. JBL PartyBox? TWS. If two units don't share a protocol, they don't get booked together. It's boring, but it keeps me from becoming a human troubleshooter in the worst moment of the night.

The cost of that first mistake wasn't just the awkward gap in the music. It was three hours of my life, one annoyed client, and a damaged reputation. All because I skipped a five-minute compatibility check. That's the hidden price of ignoring process.

Argument 2: Power ratings lie if you only read the big number

The more expensive mistake came later, with a client who owned a pair of passive speakers and a rack-mounted MMW power amplifier. The amplifier's faceplate said “3000W.” The speakers were rated at 250W program power. Common sense said that was more than enough. But the 3000W number was peak power, not continuous RMS power. The actual RMS output at 8 ohms was far lower than I expected—so low that my client kept cranking the input gain to get more volume. The amp was clipping, and clipping is the enemy of tweeters.

In less than two weeks, one tweeter was dead. The repair cost $220. The client blamed the speakers. I blamed the process. The real problem: we accepted a headline power number without asking what mattered for the actual load.

I now keep a rule in bold on our configuration sheet: “Use RMS at 8 ohms. Ignore peak ratings.” If the MMW power amplifier's continuous output isn't greater than the speaker's continuous rating by a reasonable margin, we don't connect them. (Mental note: I also violated this rule on my home system once. It did not end well.)

And this matters even at the high end. Consider the Tannoy Prestige GRF Gold Reference loudspeaker. It's an incredibly sensitive speaker—efficient, detailed, and not in need of massive wattage. In fact, an oversized, sloppy amplifier can make it sound hard and aggressive. A well-matched, modest amplifier was the fix.

The point isn't that power is bad. It's that “how much power” is the wrong first question. The right question is: What does the amplifier actually deliver continuously, and does it fit the loudspeaker's sensitivity and program rating? That's a process question.

Argument 3: Gain structure is not “fine” until you've checked it twice

The third recurring mistake in my career involves gain structure. For years, I would plug a Beacon Audio Mixer into a powered speaker, turn everything on, and wonder why the sound was distorted.

I tested cables. I blamed the subwoofer. I once replaced a driver that wasn't broken.

The actual issue was that the Beacon Audio Mixer's output level was too hot for the input stage of the next device. The input was clipping before the signal reached the main volume control. My ears told me something was wrong, but I couldn't identify the stage. My lack of a system turned a simple level mismatch into a multi-hour investigation.

The fix wasn't better gear. It was a sequence. Our team now follows a gain-staging procedure: set the mixer's master fader to -10 dB, keep channel levels at unity, then bring up the speaker or amplifier input slowly. It takes sixty seconds. It used to cost me an entire evening, plus whatever equipment I might damage in the process.

Why do we skip this step? Because setup isn't glamorous. The excitement comes from the first beat drop, not from reading level meters. But the first beat drop only sounds incredible when the levels are already correct.

Objection: “Trust your ears, man”

I hear the same objection every time I share this philosophy: “Trust your ears. Just listen. Analog. Feel.”

I have mixed feelings about that. Part of me agrees completely. The best live engineers I know seem to have a sixth sense. They can hear a system's problems before any analyzer can. Another part of me remembers being the person who trusted what he felt and still fried a driver, mispaired a set of speakers, and spent hours chasing a nonexistent buzz.

Here's how I reconcile it: use the process to reach a known-good baseline, then use your ears for the creative decisions on top. Art on top of engineering, not instead of it.

Honestly, I'm not sure why some people can skip every form of procedure and still produce beautiful results. My best guess is that they've internalized the critical steps through decades of repetition, and their instincts are a compressed version of a process. That's a luxury. Most of us aren't that person. A small team with a Friday-night gig and a rental truck needs a checklist.

The bottom line

There's something satisfying about a system that simply works. The setup is faster. The failure rate drops. The client's face is calm instead of worried. And, surprisingly, the sound quality gets more consistent.

From a JBL speaker Flip 6 to a JBL speaker PartyBox to an MMW power amplifier to a Beacon Audio Mixer to a pair of Tannoy Prestige GRF Gold Reference loudspeakers, the pattern is identical. The gear is only as good as our ability to choose it, connect it, and tune it—on purpose, in an order that we control.

So before you spend another dollar on a new gadget, ask yourself: Do I have a process? If not, start there. It will save you more money than any upgrade. It will also make you sound better on the nights that count.
