Outdoors, bass doesn't have walls to bounce off. That's physics. A 30-by-40-foot room holds low frequencies far better than the same area of open lawn. So if you're comparing setups, don't assume indoor recommendations translate to events on grass or pavement.
For 50 to 75 people at a market or a garden event, two JBL EON610s on stands usually cover speech and background music fine. Add a sub if you're playing recorded music — even a modest one improves the feel more than you'd expect.
For 100 to 150 people, you're likely looking at 12-inch mains and a dedicated subwoofer. A JBL PRX915 is probably more than a school fundraiser needs, but it's the right ballpark for a real stage setup.
My mistake: I bought two 15-inch PA speakers thinking bigger drivers meant better sound. What I got was weight, boomy performance in smaller spaces, and a mix that lacked clarity. The speakers were fine. I was the problem — I bought for an imaginary stage instead of the venues I actually worked.

Step 6: Treat power, cables, and gain staging as part of the system
In my experience, when an outdoor system fails mid-gig, it's usually a power problem, not a speaker problem. I'm not trying to be clever. I've watched a second set get canceled because an extension cord couldn't handle the draw.
Three things to sort out before the gear arrives:
Circuit capacity. A standard US outlet works on a 15-amp circuit at 120 volts — about 1,800 watts. Set the channel gains so the loudest moments sit just below the yellow on the meter.
Balanced cables. For long runs from the mixer to powered speakers, balanced XLR is the safe choice. Unbalanced lines over about 20 feet pick up buzz. And label your cables. Labeling is not glamorous, but it beats tracing a silent line while a crowd waits.
Step 7: Set the DSP before the first song, not during it
Modern JBL PA speakers include app-based DSP. You can adjust EQ contours, set crossover points between mains and subs, and apply response tuning. It's genuinely useful — if you do it before the event starts.
My first time with a DSP app, I set the crossover wrong on the main-and-sub system. It sounded okay in soundcheck, and then the vocals disappeared the moment the band kicked in. I spent the entire first set scrolling menus between songs. That's a mistake you make once.
Build the system at home or the day before. Confirm the crossover, start with a neutral EQ, and walk the actual venue to listen for obvious issues. There's a big difference between configuring on site and preparing on purpose.

Feedback is next. Outdoors, there are no walls to absorb reflections, and a microphone in the wrong spot will still howl. Walk the stage with the microphone before the event, and listen for the moment before it takes off.
And here's a confession I don't love making: I have mixed feelings about the budget side of this conversation. On one hand, I don't want anyone to repeat my $1,800 mistake. On the other, I've seen gear at lower price points fail exactly when it mattered — and that failure costs more than the saving.
