JBL, iPhone, and Vintage Audio: A Scenario-Based Guide to Choosing the Right Sound Setup

There Is No “Best” Audio Setup – Only the Right One for Your Situation

I get some version of this question almost weekly: “What’s the best JBL speaker?” Or sometimes it’s, “Should I just buy those Altec Model 19 loudspeakers I found on eBay?”

I run a small audio equipment shop, and I’ve handled more same-day audio emergencies than I can count. Maybe 200. Honestly, it’s closer to 180, I’d have to check the ledger. Scenario A: How to Connect a JBL Speaker to an iPhone (The 60-Second Fix)

The call usually goes like this: “My friend’s speaker won’t connect to my iPhone and the party starts in 20 minutes.” Most of the time, the speaker in question is a JBL Flex.

The JBL Flex has been my default recommendation for small portable gigs since it launched.   2. Enter pairing mode. If it isn’t already blinking, press and hold the Bluetooth button for 2–3 seconds until the LED flashes.
  3. Forget the old connection. This is the step everyone misses. On your iPhone, go to Settings → Bluetooth, tap the blue “i” next to the speaker’s name, and select “Forget This Device”.

If it still won’t connect, move closer—within 30 feet, no walls between. Bluetooth 5.3, the spec the Flex uses, handles range well, but concrete walls are still a connection killer.

Scenario B: DIY Build – Choosing the Right Midrange Loudspeaker Driver

If you’re repairing or building speakers, this becomes a completely different conversation. And this is exactly where “best of” lists get dangerous.

Everything I’d read about midrange drivers said to match the original driver perfectly—same impedance, same wattage, same brand. In practice, I’ve found that’s not the right way to think. The conventional wisdom is to never swap drivers without matching every spec. My experience from dozens of refits suggests otherwise; what actually matters is matching the driver to the crossover, not the brand name on the magnet.

The midrange loudspeaker driver (i.e., the component that handles vocals and the critical frequencies between the woofer and tweeter) is the heart of any speaker build. Here’s what I check before ever recommending one:

  • Sensitivity matching. If your existing midrange is rated at 93 dB at 1W/1m, don’t drop in an 89 dB driver. It will effectively disappear into the mix. A mismatch of 2 dB is tolerable; 4 dB or more is a problem.
  • Frequency response overlap. If your crossover hands off to the tweeter at 4 kHz, the replacement needs to comfortably reach 4 kHz.
  • Impedance. Swapping an 8-ohm driver for a 6-ohm one changes the crossover point and the output level. Keep it simple: match the impedance.
  • Mounting depth. The driver needs to match the enclosure volume—a deeper magnet reduces internal air space, and that shifts the bass response.

For replacements, JBL’s OEM midrange drivers work fine if you can find them. For many older speakers, though, brands like Dayton Audio or Eminence offer better parts availability and clearer documentation. It’s not about which is “better” on paper—it’s about which one you can actually get, and which one fits the design.

Scenario C: On-Location Production – The Sonar Audio Mixer

For podcasting, live streaming, or small venue sets, the piece of gear that saves my clients most often is a Sonar Audio mixer. It’s not a prestige brand—it’s one of those products that moves units on Amazon without a lot of magazine coverage. But it does two things reliably: it’s compact, and it behaves.

With mixers, the real quality is in the preamps and routing. You can’t judge a preamp by a spec sheet—manufacturer-published signal-to-noise and distortion numbers rarely match real-world performance. When I’m setting one up on a tight deadline, I do three things:

  • Set levels before connecting anything. Channel gains to unity, master output down. Build the signal chain in order, and you’ll avoid the “why is there a loud hum” panic later.
  • Leave phantom power off until the mic is plugged in. The 48V button is the most-hit button on any mixer. Turning it on before connecting can damage some condenser mics.
  • Keep the master at 75% or below. On the compact Sonar mixers, the output stage starts to saturate around 75–80% of the dial. That’s a design choice, not a defect (not that a real LED level meter would hurt).

When the mixer’s outputs feed a JBL speaker—say a Flex in a small meeting room—use balanced cables if you can. Unbalanced cables work for short runs, but they pick up noise on anything over 15 feet.

One thing I’ve learned the hard way: when you’re producing on location, the speaker or mixer you chose is the first thing the client hears. The output quality shapes their perception of the whole production. They may not know what a midrange driver is, but they instantly know if the audio sounds thin or muddy. That’s why I’d rather set up a $129 Flex correctly than throw a $1,000 tower speaker in a room and hope for the best.

Scenario D: Vintage Restoration – Altec Model 19 Loudspeaker Specifications: Still Relevant Today?

Here’s where things get emotional. The Altec Model 19 is a legend among vintage audio enthusiasts. Built in the 1970s (production started in 1971 and ran until about 1978, I’d have to verify the exact end date), it’s a large floor-standing speaker with a 15-inch woofer and a horn-loaded compression driver. The original Altec Model 19 loudspeaker specifications still impress:

  • Frequency response: 30 Hz – 20 kHz
  • Sensitivity: 98 dB at 1W/1m (still high by modern standards)
  • Nominal impedance: 8 ohms
  • Power handling: 100 W continuous, 200 W peak
  • Crossover frequency: 1.2 kHz
  • Dimensions: 37.5″ H × 27.5″ W × 20″ D (bring a friend)

A quick note on measurement standards: the Audio Engineering Society’s AES2-2012 standard defines how loudspeaker sensitivity should be measured—1 watt input, 1 meter distance, on-axis. The Altec’s 98 dB figure uses that convention, which is why it’s still comparable to modern speakers. Not every vintage spec survives that comparison; this one does.

Those numbers were impressive in 1975, and honestly, some of them still are. The 98 dB sensitivity means the Model 19 doesn’t need a big amplifier—a good 20-watt tube amp can drive them to satisfying levels. That’s rarer than you’d think.

But the “vintage is always better” thinking comes from an era when high-efficiency speakers were rare. Today, you can buy modern speakers that reach similar frequency response numbers for less money and a fraction of the floor space. What nobody reproduces at a low price is that effortless, horn-loaded midrange presence—the reason the Model 19 still has a following.

I went back and forth with a client last month over this exact question. Altec Model 19s at $1,800, or a modern pair of JBL Stage 260H towers for the same money? On paper, the JBLs made more sense. But my gut said he’d always wonder what the Altecs sounded like. I told him to get the Altecs, and after I hit send, I kept second-guessing—what if he hated them? The week until his first listening session was stressful. The email I got back said his wife walked into the room and just said, “Oh.” He hasn’t regretted it.
